Matt Ulrich joined the Winning Edge Athletics team in 2007 because he wanted to teach people what he has always done best... TRAINING FOR SUCCESS!!!

Matt found himself back in Chicago after playing two exciting years in the National Football League. He is originally from the Windy City area, a product of Streamwood High School, where he earned a football scholarship to Northwestern University.

As a student athlete and history/education major at Northwestern, Matt was a three year starter on the offensive line earning the rank of team captain as a senior in 2004. He helped the team reach two bowl games and was a Big Ten Champion in 2000.

Through hard work and dedication in the gym on and off the field, he became a three time IRON CAT, an award bestowed only to athletes achieving the highest level of strength, speed, and overall conditioning. As top point earner, Matt was recognized as the best conditioned athlete at Northwestern University in 2003. This success snowballed in 2004 when Matt was acknowledged as a National Strength and Conditioning Association All-American and was voted to the Honorable Mention All-Big Ten team. Matt still currently owns many lifting records at Northwestern including:

  • Bench Press 475lbs.
  • Incline Press 425lbs.
  • Squat 715lbs.
  • Dumbbell Military 120's for 7 reps

After college Matt took his training to the next level. Working on his speed and footwork with former USA Olympic coaches in Cincinnati, Matt impressed NFL scouts with more than his strength. On his Pro Day, Matt showed his athleticism at 304 pounds with top offensive linemen scores in all of his combine events including:

  • 5.05 40 Yard Dash
  • 4.22 Pro Shuttle
  • 6.76 3-Cone Drill
  • 32" Vertical Jump
  • 8' 8.5" Broad Jump
  • 31 reps at 225

This success led to Matt landing a free agent contract with the Indianapolis Colts moments after the 2005 NFL Draft. As a free agent, Matt earned his way on to the team beating out draft picks in both 2005 and 2006. He accrued two years on the active roster for the Colts and played in twelve games. In February of 2007, he reached the pinnacle of the football world as he acquired a championship ring and became a member of the World Champion, Super Bowl XLI Indianapolis Colts.

Since the fall of 2007, Matt's passion has been helping others achieve their athletic goals. Coach Ulrich is a certified National Academy of Sports Medicine, Performance Enhancement Specialist, has consulted high school and college strength & conditioning programs, run numerous coaching clinics, given scheduled team motivational discussions, launched programs such as PURE STEEL, and has greatly contributed in the development of RankYourWorkout.com.

Adam Kadella Expert Strength & Conditioning Coach:

Adam Kadela joined Winning Edge Athletics in early 2011 to help his friend and former teammate teach young athletes the habits and discipline necessary for elite athletic success.

Originally from Dublin, Ohio, Adam’s first mentor in the realm of strength and conditioning training was legendary author, strength coach, and power lifter, Louie Simmons, owner of Westside Barbell in Columbus. Under Louie’s guidance, Adam’s progress and education in the weight room translated to success on the field in both football and lacrosse -- where he earned scholarships to continue both sports at the next level. Ultimately selecting Northwestern University, Adam savored the opportunity to continue his athletic journey as a linebacker in the Big Ten.

As a student-athlete at NU, Adam earned both his undergraduate and master’s degree while starting three seasons at linebacker for the Wildcats. But like many careers, his was shaped less by opportunity than it was by obstacle. During the third game of his sophomore season, Adam sustained a torn MCL, meniscus, and broken leg.

Embracing this unforeseen challenge, Adam dedicated himself to improving every performance measure in the weight room that his body would allow. Also during this period of rehab, he started practicing Muay Thai kickboxing and yoga for the first time -- two disciplines that proved instrumental in facilitating his return to the field, taking him to new heights of athletic performance, and teaching him the virtue of looking beyond conventional forms of training for improving sport performance.

  • Adam finished his career at NU with the honor of serving as team captain, co-MVP, and a list of other select accomplishments, including:
  • Four-Year Letter Winner; Three-year starterNorthwestern’s all-time Incline Bench Press record holder (for his weight class)
  • All-Big Ten Selection for linebacker (Honorable Mention)
  • Academic All-Big Ten
  • Iron Cat recipient every year of his career
  • Personal training bests:
  1. Bench 455lbs
  2. Squat 575lbs
  3. 31 reps at 225
  4. 4.12 20 yard shuttle; 6.69 three cone;
  5. 9’9” Broad Jump; 31” Vertical
  6. 4.68 40 yd dash
  • Invited to Tampa Bay Buccaneers mini-camp (2008)

Electing to stay in Chicago after finishing his football career, Adam is currently a trader at the Board of Trade, but continues to pursue his passion of sports and fitness training. In 2009, he stepped out of his comfort zone of Strength, Power, and Speed training and competed in the Olympic Distance Chicago Triathlon, finishing in the top ten for his class. Also since graduating, Adam has consulted with high school strength and conditioning programs, assisted various football and lacrosse camps, and designed training and nutrition programs for a diverse group of friends, family, and clients, including helping a former NFL O-lineman transition from his 310 lb playing weight to 260 lbs – enabling him to pass the FBI’s physical fitness test.
